When not sailing deep sea, aside from teaching part time at the Chapman School, I also own a 32 foot sport fishing boat that is leased to Premier Boat Club in Stuart, FL and perform various fishing and cruising charters in local and Bahamian waters. I have performed expert witness work as a maritime industry expert on several occasions. I have also been hired to perform "freelance" work over the years by several companies (i.e. tidal calculations for a local engineering firm, pier survey in Alameda, CA for a MARAD contractor, etc.)

Details: 610 foot MARAD owned cargo ship with two twin 30 ton Hagglund cranes.
Comments: Vessel participated in a JLOTS exercise in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Tanker
Name: SS Petersburg
Rank: Chief Mate
From October 1999 to March 2008
Details: 736 foot product tanker owned by MARAD assigned to PrePositioning Squadron 3 in Guam. Vessel was a fully functional product tanker (310,000 Bbls of military fuel on board), but also was fitted with the OPDS (Offshore Petroleum Discharge System).
Comments: The OPDS system consisted of a hydraulically-launced 800 ton "barge" that formed an SPM, four miles of 6-inch HP conduit hose, a 59-ton crane, and five 56-foot, 50 ton military "Mike-6" boats, plus all associated equipment. The Petersburg was infinitely more complex than a "normal" tanker.

Comments: This tanker (former EXXON PHILADELPHIA), never carried liquid cargo, always grain while I was aboard.

Details: 208 foot US Navy oceanographic survey ship with civilian crew. Vessel carried two 34-foot survey launches that were launced and retrieved while the ship was underway.
